Fresher’s week is nearly here and we’re counting down to it! After all, we know just how beneficial it can be for your business to market to students, so it’s something we believe you should be doing. If not, there’s no better time to start. Directing your marketing efforts to university students pays off, as they are a very important part of the economy.

But, why is it so important to target this demographic during your marketing campaigns and how will you be able to benefit from it?

Students Spend Money

It’s a no brainer! While many students might still live at home while going to university, the truth is that much more are living on their own for the first time and, therefore, starting to make purchasing decisions that are ‘normal’ to everyone else.

They are excited to be able to make their own independent choices for the very first time and are more likely to begin choosing their favourite brands during this stage of their lives. This is true of national and international students, with international ones contributing an astonishing £25 billion to the UK economy at the moment!

You can have a share of this market by targeting students and making sure to direct your marketing efforts toward them.

Sure, some students might not look twice at your brand no matter how hard you try to capture their attention. However, the general truth is that students are developing their personal interests while at university and learning what they like and don’t like. They tend to experiment with brands and, should you hit the sweet spot, it’s likely they’ll start or continue to buy from you.

Establishing a relationship with this demographic will probably have a positive effect on your both your immediate and future sales. After all, today’s students are tomorrow’s consumers, and once they form a positive opinion about your brand, they will more than likely return as a customer many times.

Because students are still discovering brands – willing to experiment with businesses they didn’t know before – it’s important that you also provide them with the chance to find out about yours. Attending freshers’ fairs and other campus’ events can offer you the perfect opportunity to market to students and give them the chance to get to know you.

When a student becomes aware of your brand through a practical promotional gift or product they can use in their daily lives (for example, calendars and diaries, pens and pencils, and mugs), they will want to discover more of your products. You might be giving away freebies, but you are not losing money.

Targeting university students is essentially targeting the right audience at the right time. The potential sales that come from raising awareness of your brand to this demographic should not be easily dismissed, so make sure that you are accounting for students in your marketing campaigns!
