When was the last time you changed your mouse mat?
A seemingly irrelevant question, but it speaks volumes. When my family bought its first computer back in 1996 (it seems like eons ago!), we bought a Sylvester and Tweety mat to go with it. As far as I’m aware, Mum still has it- it’s managed to outlast four different computers, upgrades, broadband connections etc. I have a similar attachment to my Tintin one.
What does this tell us? A good mat should answer three requirements: it should be striking, durable and work well with your mouse. Let’s examine these criteria one by one:
Striking: Whatever the design, it should work. It shouldn’t go out of date or get on your nerves. If it’s advertising a product, like the thousands of Microsoft mouse mats in existence, it should be an attractive item in its own right. You’re going to be looking at it every day, remember. See it as being a more solid version of your desktop wallpaper- while you can change wallpaper at the click of a button, replacing your mouse mat can be expensive. You want to get it right first time.
Durable: Surely the major requirement for any product? If the average mouse mat works out at around £6.99, you don’t want something that’s going to fall apart within the month. The ideal mat’s a hardy fella: it’s got to withstand you bashing the mouse against it when it doesn’t work, slopping coffee, the seating plan changes that come with working in an office. It should be a tough material you can easily wipe clean.
Work well with your mouse: The litmus test of any respectable mat! It can look lovely and bounce off the walls, but if your mouse won’t move an inch on top of it, it’s back to the drawing board. Whether you’re an office worker or a gamer, you need a textured surface that will provide the necessary amount of friction, working with various different mouse technologies.
Taking all this into account, a mouse mat is the perfect promotional gift. Unlike other gifts, where you either use them and don’t notice them or lose them within days, a mat is a permanent fixture. You find yourself looking at it whether you’re negotiating a tricky bit of Excel or staring into space. If it’s both easy on the eye and made from solid, lasting material, you’ll think of the care and attention the company must have put into making the mouse mat. They can be easily produced in bulk, and fulfil a need that’s often overpriced. You’re far more likely to think well of a company that creates useful promotional gifts than some fancy knickknack you can’t do anything with!
If you want to give your business that extra boost, you can’t go wrong with one of EMC’s promotional mouse mats. It’ll keep you at the forefront of the client’s mind- and if they choose to visit your website, they’re in exactly the right place!
